What you need to know to Support a Transperson Properly

Gender and sexuality are very different things.

Gender: the mental state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones)

Sex: the biological state of being male, female or intersex

Sexuality: a person’s sexual orientation or preference.

*Gender and sexuality is on a scale, there are more than two gender and sexualities.

In other words, gender is who you ARE, sex is WHAT YOUR BODY IS and sexuality is who you are ATTRACTED TO.

So gender is mental and sex is physical, therefore do not always match.

This blog is focused on transmen.

Transman: a person who was assigned female at birth but identifies as male.

Transwoman: a person who was assigned male at birth but identifies as female.

*I hope that this blog will also be interesting and helpful to transwomen, however, as I am not a transwoman and I cannot and will not speak on behalf of them or the issues they face. Although I plan to have a few pieces about transwomen, written by a transwoman herself.

The definition of trangender and transsexual are also different.

Transgender: a person who identifies as the opposite gender/sex to which they were assigned at birth.

Transsexual: a person who has undergone any medical treatment to transition physically to the opposite sex they were born with.

Simple, right?
